Ogun Govt Demolishes Shanties at Sango Tollgate to Curb Road Accidents

The Ogun State Government has demolished shanties and makeshift structures along road setbacks at the border axis between Ogun and Lagos State as part of efforts to curb recurring road accidents at the busy Sango Tollgate.

Leading the enforcement exercise, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Dr Kafayat Lawal, said the action followed multiple warnings and abatement notices previously issued to traders occupying the area.

She noted that the affected traders had been directed to relocate, with an alternative trading site provided along Plaza Road, Sango, including designated spaces for those operating under the bridge.

According to Lawal, the demolition was necessary to clear illegal structures and street trading activities that have contributed to frequent accidents and loss of lives in the area.

“The exercise will free the Tollgate and under-bridge axis from street trading, which has often resulted in fatal incidents during traffic mishaps. This situation has become a major concern for the state government and well-meaning Nigerians,” she said.

The Permanent Secretary stressed that the government would not tolerate the continued occupation of the Tollgate corridor by traders, describing the practice as a significant safety risk that has led to avoidable deaths and permanent disabilities.

She urged affected traders to comply with the relocation directive and move to the newly designated market developed in collaboration with the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government and the Olota-in-Council.

Lawal further warned that any trader found returning to the Tollgate or under-bridge areas would face strict enforcement measures in accordance with the law.

The exercise underscores the state government’s renewed commitment to urban order, environmental safety, and the protection of lives along critical transport corridors.
