Teachers across Ogun State have been urged to adopt a careful and responsible approach in the use of the Ogun Learning Enhancement and Academic Resource Network (OgunLEARN), an AI-powered teaching platform designed to enhance knowledge delivery in schools.
The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abayomi Arigbabu, gave the charge while hosting a group of researchers and Ethical Artificial Intelligence advocates in Abeokuta.
While encouraging teachers to embrace the digital platform in classroom teaching, Arigbabu stressed the importance of using it with caution and for its intended purpose.
“Now that we have an AI-powered tool to make impartation easy and we have also encouraged teachers to effectively use it in classrooms, there is also a need for them to be cautious in its usage. It should be used positively for its purpose,” he said.
The Commissioner explained that the OgunLEARN platform was specifically designed with Nigerian peculiarities in mind, aligning with the state’s curriculum, scheme of work, and learners’ experiences. He noted that the system was developed by teachers in the state to provide access to digital lesson notes and ensure consistent quality of education across both urban and rural communities.
According to him, the platform also reduces the administrative workload on teachers, enabling them to focus more on student engagement while offering real-time data insights to school administrators and policymakers to improve learning outcomes.
Arigbabu commended the professionalism of the Ethical AI advocacy group for supporting teachers in adopting technology-driven teaching methods in line with the state government’s education reforms.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Oluwatosin Oloko, praised the researchers for their dedication and achievements in various local and international competitions. She urged them to continue mentoring other teachers to embrace AI-driven innovations for improved teaching and learning.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the Lead Researcher, Owolabi Adelano, lauded the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun for introducing impactful innovations in the education sector.
He noted that the digitalisation of the education system has made knowledge delivery more seamless and effective, while assuring that efforts would be intensified to train teachers who are not yet proficient in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Adelano added that the group remains committed to supporting teachers across the state to become more digitally competent, ensuring the full benefits of AI-driven education are realised.
