Egba Leaders Call for Political Clarity and Development Ahead of 2027 Ogun Governorship

Prominent voices from Egbaland have issued a call for renewed political clarity, equity, and targeted development in Ogun State, coinciding with the 2026 Lisabi Day celebrations in honour of Lisabi Agbongbo Akala.

In a statement marking the annual cultural event, Otunba Segun Showunmi, Odofin Keesi of Egbaland, emphasized the need for the Egba people to define their political position and assert their interests ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Highlighting a historical tradition of balance among the state’s major blocs—Egba, Ijebu/Remo, and Yewa/Awori—Showunmi warned that any disruption to this arrangement could destabilize Ogun State’s political framework. He described proposals suggesting prolonged governorship control by interests linked to Iperu as “politically untenable” and a threat to the principle of equity.

Showunmi also raised concerns over recent traditional and political developments, including actions associated with Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, which appear to bypass established Egba institutions. He cautioned that such moves risk marginalizing Egba influence in both primary and secondary positions of power within the state.

“Cooperation must never be mistaken for weakness, and inclusion must never come at the cost of dignity,” Showunmi stressed.

Beyond politics, he highlighted developmental stagnation in key Egba areas, including Abeokuta North and South, Odeda, Obafemi Owode, Ifo, and Ewekoro. Projects such as the Ewekoro airstrip and incomplete civic developments in Abeokuta were cited as evidence of systemic neglect. He further criticized land allocation practices and called for greater investment in educational institutions like the University of Medicine, arguing that Egba communities deserve growth commensurate with their population and historical contributions.

Showunmi also noted that the role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who holds the traditional title of Areago of Egbaland, will be closely observed, underscoring the importance of local consultation in determining the state’s political future.

“Political legitimacy in 2027 will be anchored on local consensus, not external imposition. The principle of power management, rooted in the sacrifices of our forebears, has always guided the balance that sustains Ogun State. That doctrine must not now be distorted,” he said.

The statement concluded with a firm call for Egba unity, proactive engagement in governance, and equitable development to ensure that the bloc maintains its rightful influence within the state’s political and developmental agenda.
