The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has recorded a breakthrough in its crackdown on cybercrime and internet fraud with the arrest of a 24-year-old suspect allegedly linked to an online vehicle purchase scam involving over ₦3 million.
Addressing journalists in Benin City, the State Commandant of the corps, Saidi Ayinla Akintayo, disclosed that the case was reported on February 3, 2026, by Mr. Olanrewaju Nutudeen, who claimed he was defrauded while attempting to purchase a 2010 Toyota Corolla through a United States-based online car auction platform.
According to the Commandant, the victim allegedly transferred the sum of ₦3,005,000 into an Access Bank account belonging to one Oluwafunmilayo Olubode after concluding arrangements for the purchase of the vehicle. However, suspicions were raised when all communication with the supposed online agent ceased shortly after payment was made.
Commandant Akintayo explained that following the complaint, the Command immediately deployed its investigative team to unravel the circumstances surrounding the transaction and track down those involved in the alleged fraud.
He said the investigation, aided by a court order granting access to the account details connected to the transaction, led to the arrest of one Mr. Momoh Rabiu of Mission Road, Auchi, Edo State.
The NSCDC boss stated that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed that his Access Bank account was used by an associate identified simply as “Destiny Money,” who is currently on the run, to receive the fraudulent proceeds.
The suspect further revealed that the funds were subsequently transferred into multiple accounts, including a First Bank account bearing the name Victory Olatunji, while he allegedly received ₦277,000 as his share from the proceeds of the fraud.
Commandant Akintayo noted that investigations were still ongoing and assured that efforts had been intensified to apprehend other suspects connected with the crime, particularly the fleeing accomplice.
He added that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
The Commandant reiterated the commitment of the NSCDC Edo State Command towards combating cybercrime and other criminal activities across the state, while also urging residents to exercise caution and verify online platforms before carrying out financial transactions.
