NUT President threatens Nationwide strike if.............

The President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Titus Ambah has asked the federal government to do all within her capacity to rescue alive pupils and teachers kidnapped in Oyo state and put measures in place to prevent reoccurrence.

recall that over 40 pupils and teachers including a toddler were kidnapped in three schools in Oriire Local government area of Oyo state on May 15th leading to public outcry and wide condemnation.

While featuring live on SPOTLIGHT on Super 92.7 FM, Lagos, the NUT President regretted that no one and no where is safe again in the country.

“So, we as a NUT, our duty as a union that is responsible for the welfare of our members, is to continue to advocate for conducive working environment for our teachers”

“And the responsibility of government, as you are all aware, is to provide, safety, security of the lives and property of its own citizen. If they say property, that's school inclusive. And if they say life, that's the life of teachers and the people also inclusive.”

“But as leaders of these teachers of Nigeria, we won't fold our hands to allow, our teachers being kidnapped, being killed, being slaughtered like animals, and, we are expected to still go to school. If, the environment for us to go and teach is not conducive, especially what has happened in Oyo, then we have the right to direct our teachers to remain at home until safety is guaranteed and until our colleagues are released, to their family and also our learners that are also in captivity.”

Mr Amba added that since schools have become vulnerable to attacks by insurgents and kidnappers, government should have been proactive enough to beef up security around them.

He called out the Oyo State government for not making moves to shut down schools across Oyo State until security is secured in and around schools in the State.

“Let me say it clearly that, to us, to understand, we are not well satisfied with, the action of, the oil state government what happened in in in Oyo state.”

“If you recall very, very well, a similar incident from Kebbi State. And immediately, the state had  to close down schools all over the state. I remember clearly that schools we are closed in Kebbi, schools were closed in Niger, schools were closed in Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, for safety.”

“It will interest you to know that even the federal government, the Federal Ministry of Education had to close federal unity colleges in vulnerable areas.”

“So, what had happened in in Oyo state? Ordinarily, the first thing that should have happened is to close school, and make sure that peace is restored first, and maybe investigation should commence. If those schools were closed, even if for nothing but to show concern for those our colleagues out there”

Titus Amba also threatened to call out a nationwide strike if Oyo state Government decides to apply no work no pay rules against the protesting teachers.

“If there is no safety in your job place, you won't be there. Let us tell ourselves the truth. If the governor of Oyo state is not well protected, Information will get to him, and he will not even be there.”

“The issue of no work, no pay, even teachers are ready In fact, till thy kingdom come. Let the government mention it Then we'll continue to shut down the schools.”

“If that is done in Oyo state, let me assure you that it's not going to be only in Oyo state that teachers will down tools, it will be all across the country.”

Meanwhile, Teachers from Oyo, Ogun and Lagos States supported by the Nigeria Labour Congress have embarked on a peaceful protest demanding for immediate rescue of the kidnapped victims and improved security nationwide.
