The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ogun State, Otunba Yinka Ola Williams has called for caution amidst continued calls for the establishment of state police.
He called for a holistic reform of the Nigeria Police force as they are better trained and equipped to tackle the security challenges being faced by the nation as against the seeming rush to pass the state police bill without proper planning.
Otunba Ola Williams while speaking on Super FM Lagos’ current affairs show, Politics Now added that “The job of the President is to reform the police, I think what we need more now instead of state police is to strengthen and empower the existing police structure”
“Let’s reform it as it is, let’s empower the military, let’s see where all the monies allocated is going”.
While reacting to activities of several groups like “Iru ekun” championed by Sunday Adeyemo also known as Sunday Igboho, he said “we are not in the reign of oba afonja or one aare ona kakanfo, this is the federal republic of Nigeriain 2026, there is a way we should operate”
The SDP guber candidate expressed worry about the stereotyping of Northerners in the South West and how it further causes disunity among the populace.
“All the Northerners that have lived with us in the South for many years, we are beginning to see them as terrorists, when it’s only a few of them especially those from adjoining African countries”
