GIA: Celebrating One Year of Leading Position in Airport Operations in Nigeria.

The past year has marked a significant milestone for Gateway International Airport (GIA) as it celebrates one year of maintaining a leading position in airport operations in Nigeria.

Situated in Iperu, Ogun State, Gateway International Airport has continued to maintain its leading position in airport operations in Nigeria.

It has been one year since Gateway International Airport commenced full scheduled flight operations, a journey defined by growth, resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to delivering operational excellence within one of the country’s most dynamic and demanding sectors.

Since taking its place at the forefront of airport operations, Gateway International Airport has continued to demonstrate that excellence in aviation goes beyond moving passengers and aircraft. It is about creating seamless experiences, maintaining the highest operational standards, embracing technology, and contributing meaningfully to the growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry.

Without mincing words, GIA’s first year in this leading position has been characterised by a clear focus on efficiency, safety, professionalism, and customer satisfaction. Through strategic leadership and a dedicated workforce, the organisation has strengthened its operational capabilities while responding effectively to the evolving needs of passengers, airlines, stakeholders, and the wider aviation community.

Recall that recently, popular actor Mr. Ebun Oloyede, popularly known as Ola Iya Igwe, commended the airport staff and the airline for providing a smooth journey from Iperu to Abuja without the stress traditionally associated with travelling through Lagos.

Also, another frequent passenger at Gateway International Airport, Alhaji Adebayo Samsideen Apelogun, President of Accomoran, commended the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for the execution of the airport project, saying the facility has significantly reduced the stress associated with travelling through Lagos, as he now enjoys flying directly from Iperu to Abuja.

Among the notable successes recorded by the airport is this year direct flights for the state’s pilgrims from Gateway International Airport, Iperu, to Mecca, as well as their safe return from Mecca to Gateway International Airport, Iperu.

This was a significant milestone, described by the Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, as a testament to Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment to infrastructural development and economic growth.

The successful outbound journey of the state’s pilgrims from Gateway International Airport to Mecca, as well as their safe arrival back at GIA, marked a new chapter in the state’s aviation and transportation history.

Engr. Dairo said the seamless landing and processing of the pilgrims demonstrated the operational readiness and growing importance of the airport as a strategic asset for Ogun State and the Southwest region.

Airport operations are built on teamwork. From frontline personnel and operational teams to management and support functions, every member of the GIA family plays an important role in ensuring that operations run safely, efficiently, and professionally.

Over the past year, GIA has continued to invest in its people through capacity building, professional development, teamwork, and a culture that encourages accountability and excellence. This people-centred approach has helped create a workforce equipped to meet the challenges of modern airport operations while maintaining a strong focus on service delivery.

Another defining feature of GIA’s journey has been its commitment to operational excellence. In an industry where precision, timing, safety, and coordination are critical, GIA understands that every detail matters.

Recently, the Consultant to the Governor on Airport Management, Capt. Dapo Olumide, expressed confidence that the airport would continue to play a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity, boosting commerce, and attracting more development opportunities to Ogun State.

Another significant milestone achieved by the airport is the commencement of five-day commercial flight operations from Iperu to Abuja, running from Monday to Friday, with additional routes expected to come on board soon.

Gateway International Airport has continued to pursue improved processes, stronger operational coordination, and innovative approaches designed to enhance efficiency and reliability. These efforts reflect GIA’s broader vision of building airport operations that are not only effective today but also prepared for the demands of tomorrow.

Also revealing the success behind Gateway International Airport, Consultant to the Governor on Aviation Regulations, Engr. Ben Adeyileka revealed the smooth functioning of Gateway International Airport depends on the strong collaboration among airlines, regulators, government agencies, service providers, security Organizations, passengers and numerous other stakeholders.

While the Consultant to the Governor on Aviation Matters, Dr Mohammed Odunowo posited that growing patronage of Gateway International Airport is a reflection of the confidence being placed in the facility by passengers, airlines, government, and other stakeholders. With its strategic location and expanding operations, the airport is increasingly positioning itself as an important gateway for Ogun State and the wider Southwest region.

As GIA celebrates this first year of scheduled commercial flight operations, the achievement represents more than just an anniversary. It is a celebration of progress, determination, teamwork, and the vision that brought the airport to life.

Gateway International Airport’s ambition extends beyond celebrating what has been achieved. It is about creating an even stronger future—one built on improved connectivity, operational excellence, passenger satisfaction, economic opportunities, and a sustainable aviation ecosystem.

The journey has only just begun.

Happy Anniversary to Gateway International Airport.

One Year of Operations. One Year of Progress. One Year of Excellence.
